Unit 3 –FBS (Simon Fraser Student Society Food and Beverage Services):

A member of the Simon Fraser Student Society (SFSS) made a motion on the floor of their Annual General Meeting (AGM) that SFSS cease to operate the Food and Beverage Services (FBS). The motion was not approved on the AGM floor. The SFSS Board added the following resolution to their already-packed Special General Meeting (SGM) agenda in order to address the issue:

“Whereas the Food and Beverage Services (FBS) is comprised of the Highland Pub, The Higher Grounds Coffee Shop, The Ladle vegetarian restaurant, and catering services; Whereas this is a nonbinding opinion poll; Whereas the SFSS is interested in seeking the membership’s opinion; Are you in favour of continuing to operate the Food and Beverage Services?”

In response to this being added to the SFSS SGM agenda, CUPE took action. Flyers containing speaking points about the issue and sticker-buttons were created and distributed to the SFSS membership as they entered the SGM meeting floor. All but one member of the SFSS voted YES! to continue providing food and beverage services.

Enough is enough. The cuts to our public postal service need to stop.

Canada Post management, backed by this federal government, is stubbornly insisting on cutting door-to-door delivery of mail in cities and towns across the country. This despite the fact that Canada Post is a profitable public service that millions depend on.

They tell us the cuts are needed because Canada Post isn’t financially viable. Nothing could be further from the truth. This year the company has announced it is poised to post record profits. Instead of cutting door-to-door services, Canada Post should be expanding services.

Postal workers know the score. They know that we deliver more than just the mail. We deliver peace of mind and security. In a nutshell, we deliver community. Check out this first video in our series featuring Rebekah Mahar, who delivers in North Vancouver.

Join us in demanding an end to these cuts. Join us in calling for a real conversation about postal banking, because a postal bank would be good for everyone – except the big banks.

We’re launching this campaign to give a boost to a conversation and a movement that’s already underway, one committed to reversing these ill-advised cuts.
